What is Drifting about?
Drifting is a tabletop roleplaying game for two players which creates intimacy and longing at the end of the world. It’s a DM-less game for close friends whose lives, for one reason or another, have placed them far apart from one another.
Spend days journaling alone, then roll to see if you may call one another. Drifting is played over many short sessions for several weeks with players separated from each other. Each player is given a unique book that acts as a playset with its own world and character building options.
Who's making it?
Marceline Leiman is the author of Drifting. She's a trans Jewish game designer based in New York City. She utilizes her skills in storytelling, art, and design to create relatable, memorable player experiences. She has published and worked in the tabletop industry as a designer and developer. @marcelineleiman
Eugene An is the illustrator of Drifting. Their a Buryatian trans non-binary game designer and artist based in New York City. They use their visual arts skills to enhance design. They use games as a medium to express themselves and participate in marginalized gender and ethnic minority conversations. @lorgoncewas / eugenean.co
Why did we make this game?
Drifting started as a question: Can we make a solo rpg that's meaningfully interactive with another player? What we discovered in that process is that yes it is possible, and that it makes for incredibly intimate and intentional conversations.
We love collaborative story games like The Quiet Year and Alice is Missing as much as thoughtful solitary games like Long Haul 1983 and Thousand Year Old Vampire. Drifting is inspired by both of these genre forces to create a new system of storytelling and collaboration.
Testimonials
"Drifting’s strengths lie in a few distinct areas, all to your credit: first, in thoughtful writing and consideration for players new to journaling games and more creatively-demanding roleplay. Second, in your caring, craft-oriented eye for the aesthetics of a paper game as an object to hold, read and understand. Drifting is an especially impressive thesis." - Naomi Clark, department chair of NYU Game Center
"I love it. It's an awesome premise and really cool game." - Chris Schnetzler (designer and founder of Junk Food Games)
"I really really really dig this. I've played similar-ish games, but the phone call component adds so much to the experience. I also love that the phone call isn't automatic; that was a smart decision that feels like it would lead to so many interesting situations. I'd absolutely buy this, for sure." - Ian Howard (designer of Here We Used To Fly)
"My partner and I have been together for 5 years. Playing your game made me feel like we were on our first date again." - a playtester
"Playing your game was so cathartic for me." - a playtester
"I've played ttrpg's with actors and non-gamers before, and I think your game would be really good for those people." - a playtester
